How My Husband And I Use Rituals To Romanticize Everyday Life

And How To Leverage Rituals In Your Relationship Too

My husband and I have a really fun marriage (not bragging, it's just true!). But please do not think that I'm saying we lead exciting or dramatic lives. No no no. We are extremely boring and basic. But we're really good at one thing that allows us to make ordinary living (even and especially the kind that feels like a grind) really fun, with lots of little moments to look forward to.

How, you ask? Ritual.

As a couples therapist, I actually think we don't talk about ritual nearly enough. We focus on "serious" skills. Communication. Emotion regulation. Validation. And these are all important! But ritual is a vital practice too, and in my experience, many couples don't know how to harness it.

Ritual isn't about extravagant or unusual activities. In fact, rituals rely on repetition of the mundane. The continuity of small, predictable pleasures builds meaning.

So, today's Love Note is both fun and impactful. I'm going to walk you through what rituals really are (and aren't), the specific rituals my husband and I rely on as busy working parents, and how you too can use ritual to create a more meaningful, joyful bond! Let's dive in.
