Why My Husband And I Go To Couples Therapy
And What It's Like To Be A Couples Therapist In Couples Therapy
About 18 months ago, my husband and I sought couples therapy. We had gone briefly early in our marriage, before our first child was born, but it was short-lived and to be totally honest, not helpful. I wasn't able to turn off my professional brain and felt like I was still "on" during sessions. And our marriage was overall really solid, so we stopped.
But a year and a half ago, we went through a period of high stress as a family. It was no one's fault, but we were both struggling and felt pretty significantly disconnected. As we managed the situation and stress in our own ways, we each developed a collection of wounds that gradually began to fester.
I'm so glad we accessed help when we did, because it was one of the best things we've ever done for our relationship.
Today, I'm taking you behind the curtain and sharing what we've worked on in couples therapy, what it's like to be a couples therapist in couples therapy myself, why we've continued even though we're no longer in a rough patch, and more!
