When Your Partner Is Never Over It (No Matter How Much You Apologize)

How Much Repair Is Too Much Repair?

Welcome to Love Notes For Real Life! This is my space away from the noise of social media to dive deep into all the tricky, nuanced relationship topics you're struggling and puzzling over. Yes, it's a paid newsletter, but I promise it's worth it (plus there's a free trial if you're on the fence)! You get weekly+ explorations, advice, and insight from me—a psychologist, high conflict couples therapist, and author. I hope you join the party!

Stick Around

Let's get right into it. You hurt your partner. Maybe you totally understand why they're hurt and know you messed up. Or maybe you don't entirely get it and suspect you personally would not feel hurt in the same situation.

Either way, you see that they're hurt. You care about them. And so you try to understand their experience. You listen and you apologize. You show up.

But then...they’re still not over it. They want to talk more about how you hurt them. And you start to feel your own empathy crash out. You feel tired. You feel helpless, like nothing you say matters. Like your genuine repair does not matter. Like they are just going to rant at you until some inner timer goes off and that's when they'll stop and not a second sooner.

I see this dynamic all the time with couples. Negotiations over what counts as repair, how much repair is reasonable, and when to call a conflict good-enough are incredibly common.

So, today, I'm going to lay out for you:

  • exactly what NOT to do in this situation,
  • what's actually going on for your partner in these moments (you won't respond more effectively until you get this part),
  • what you're going to do instead for much better results,
  • and how to set clear, compassionate boundaries when you do not have more repair to give.

It's juicy so let's dive in.
