How To Stop Threatening To Break Up During Conflict

Welcome to Love Notes For Real Life! This is my space away from the noise of social media to dive deep into all the tricky, nuanced relationship topics you're struggling and puzzling over. Yes, it's a paid newsletter, but I promise it's worth it (plus, it costs less than a fancy latte) You get weekly+ explorations, advice, and insight from me—a psychologist, high conflict couples therapist, and author. I hope you join the party!

Stick Around

You didn't want to have another fight, not one like this. You do not have it in you to go in circles till you collapse with exhaustion.

You want to feel heard.

You want to get some sleep without emotional turmoil as a bedtime activity.

You want to feel like a team, not two wounded people stuck in the same misery loop. So, you call it.

"Let's just break up."

"Maybe we just aren't meant to be."

"I can't keep doing this anymore. I'm done."

Do you mean it? Yeah, in the moment you do. But then the next day, after you've slept and eaten and breathed and thought, you aren't so sure. You finally communicate, for real. You understand their side. They see yours. You think, "Let's give it another try."

But for so many couples, this painful pattern isn't a one-off. In every bad fight, you end up saying hurtful words you really can't take back. Maybe sometimes you do actually "take a break" or separate for a few days. Other times, your desperate suggestion to "call it quits" is just a flailing attempt to resolve the conflict, fast.

If you've been in this tornado, you know it absolutely sucks (on both sides). It's devastating to hear your partner give up in the middle of a fight. It's heartbreaking to be so overwhelmed or desperate that you're fresh out of ideas for how to keep the love but lose the messy fighting.

I'm going to spare you the lecture on why this behavior needs to stop—you know it needs to stop! Instead, let's walk through exactly what you can do instead of threatening a break up that you most definitely will not be sticking to.
