Consciously Communicating With Your Partner Is Not Gentle Parenting

Consciously Communicating With Your Partner Is Not Gentle Parenting

Speaking With Care Is Not Caregiving

When I offer tangible ways to improve communication in your relationship, I very commonly get a particular type of comment in response.

It goes something like this:

"Um, no, I'm not their parent. I shouldn't have to speak to them like they're a child."

Now listen, a script for how to talk to your partner in an instagram post will always feel flat. You're missing context and humanity. My hope, in sharing this type of resource, is that you take a loose framework and adapt it to your particular situation and personality.

But even with this disclaimer, I still hear a lot of resistance to consciously communicating with a partner.

Note: When I say "conscious communication" basically what I mean is communicating with some intention. Considering how your words might land with your partner. Being thoughtful and sharing your feelings and ideas in a way that is most likely to feel respectful and be well received.

I find this resistance both interesting and telling.

Today I'm going to explore:

  • why it's truly worth your time to communicate intentionally,
  • what it really means when you say "stop telling me to gentle parent my partner," and
  • practical mindset shifts for more conscious communication.

So, let's get into it.
