"Your Feelings Are Not My Responsibility"
Emotional Accountability Done Wrong (And Right)
Welcome to Love Notes For Real Life! This is my space away from the noise of social media to dive deep into all the tricky, nuanced relationship topics you're struggling and puzzling over. Yes, it's a paid newsletter, but I promise it's worth it (and it's just $6 a month). You get weekly+ explorations, advice, and insight from me—a psychologist, high conflict couples therapist, and author. I hope you join the party!
Every few weeks, I get a comment on social media saying something like:
"I'm not responsible for my partner's emotions."
And I always spend a bit of time typing and deleting my response, often to say nothing at all. Because I know what they mean, and sometimes their comment is (on the surface) in direct support of what I posted to begin with!
But at the same time, I worry that this type of language really misses the mark when it comes to healthy love. I fear that something vital is being overlooked here.
So today...we're getting beyond the pithy hot takes to the heart of what we actually owe each other. What a relationship actually means and requires. And we're going to get into why "I'm not responsible for your feelings" is simultaneously totally accurate and totally inadequate.
If "your feelings are not my responsibility" has become fighting words in your relationship, you're going to want to read this one.
