It’s Okay to Hold Your Feelings Lightly

I recently posted a reel with this text: “You might hate me for saying this, but one of the best things you can do for your relationship is stop taking your hurt feelings so seriously.” There was a caption with more detail and a disclaimer regarding abuse, but I tend to assume no one is reading the caption.

Reactions ranged from “I feel like this message can be dangerously misunderstood” to “10000%.” Even though this concept gets people riled up, I believe it’s one of the most important relationship skills to internalize and use regularly—but also one that many people find confusing.

Today, I’m breaking down

  • why many people find this idea confusing,
  • the benefits of learning to hold your emotions with a bit more lightness and flexibility, and
  • practical ways to take your own hurt feelings a bit less seriously.
