Most relationships include some degree of power imbalance. The phrase "power imbalance" sounds sinister, but it's actually just descriptive. Because no two partners have the exact same histories, identities, and roles, it is not always possible to just get rid of all power differentials within a relationship.

But power imbalances can be addressed with care and consideration...or they can be exploited. And while some people exploit the power differential in their relationship maliciously, with intent, much more frequently power imbalances cause harm inadvertently, because they have not been actively and consciously managed.
